The Human Drift, single channel video, 00:12:42, 2015-2016.

The Human Drift was created as a postscript to an earlier project ‘Worldshaving’ which investigated the socio-urban ideals of late 19th/ early 20th Century businessman and razorblade magnate King C. Gillette. Simultaneously enacting one of the earliest truly global capitalist enterprises and heralding the principle of planned obsolescence while planning what was to be a massive sustainable city meant to house the entire Earth’s population and powered by Niagara Falls; Gillette represents the extremes of modernity’s outsized vision of totality. ‘The Human Drift’ looks at Gillette’s corporate and utopian legacies and beyond to his quiet ranch estate in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California, now the primary filming location for the NBC reality-TV series ‘The Biggest Loser’, and a small outcropping of dead and dying palm trees transplanted from his ranch to the middle of the Colorado Desert.
